The site location of a new flagship KFC restaurant in the Waterfall precinct called for a distinctive and unexpected proposal for a brand that has a very concise and defined architectural language. The proposal recommended a break from the expected KFC architectural language and typology without digressing from the KFC brand. The intention was to create a contemporary flagship store that compliments and highlights the inherent qualities of the KFC brand in an unexpected and distinctive manner.

This was achieved by creating an exciting and distinctive sculptural building skin that shades the interior space from the harsh South African sun. This perforated shading element allows for the opening up of the restaurant and creating a legible interior and a delicately shaded outside seating area. It also offers the seating area a connection to the surrounding context and a pedestrian friendly edge towards Maxwell Drive.
